week three: “i have two words to say about the rest of the week: i’m in!”

week three was absolutely awesome. as each week passes, i’m realizing more and more how God is answering my prayers to make this a summer where i am challenged in the best ways, while at the same time He blesses me in ways i would never expect.

i was a little disappointed that i didn’t get to be at camp t for week two, especially after seeing some pictures online (check them out here. you can binge on them if you want. that’s how i just spent my last thirty minutes.) i recognized campers that i’d had in years past, and i was disappointed that i hadn’t been able to reconnect with them. but on sunday i return to camp and discovered two things. first, matty was really excited to see me. it was a great reunion. and second, we had three stayovers. which meant that almost a third of last week’s cabin would still be here, so it was almost like i hadn’t missed out!

also all three of them had been in my cabin last summer. so that was basically the best.

i’m sure i’ll be saying this all summer, because chances are i’ll have more opportunities to have previous campers in my cabin again. but there is just nothing so cool as being able to see the ways God has been working in the lives of kids that you’ve invested in. while i stay in touch with a few campers from over the years, the vast majority of these kids i say goodbye to on saturday and don’t get the chance to see where they are in a year. but when God allows me a glimpse into the lives of campers i’ve developed relationships with, it’s encouraging and exciting and makes me praise Him.

that was probably my high of the week, seeing how guys had grown in patience, care for others, and a desire for God. one of the campers told me after devos that he hadn’t before known that he didn’t have to earn God’s approval. but since coming to camp this week, he learned that there’s nothing he can do that will ever make God love him any less. how is it that the Lord has chosen someone like me to deliver such beautiful good news? i certainly don’t deserve it, but i will gladly accept it. praise Jesus!

other highs of the week would include the clinics. i had hip hop, mountaineering, and clay. all of them were the best. i had some of my campers in mountaineering and clay, and it was so much fun.

a variety of clinics is always the best, because you’re always on your toes and things don’t get boring. i went from choreographing the chorus to “best day of my life” to cheering on a camper who climbed to the top of mount wood to painting facial hair on the campers in clay clinic. all in a couple hours. that’s like the best.

wk3_2we did some pretty awesome things as a cabin this past week too. we went on a mud hike (one of the guys i was sure would back out was in 110%), we visited the minifarm to do the chicken round-up (side note: for some reason i’d always been afraid of chicken round up, mainly because it involved running after them to catch them and i was afraid that somehow i’d manage to lose all of camp’s chickens. but it turned out to be a blast), and we dressed up and went crazy for disco night. we also had one of my favorite unit games ever… prom night! somehow the guys always think it’s the best when they dress me up in pinks and purples and jean jackets and dresses.

what i love most about camp is the relationships that form. i love looking over at trading post and watching david listen intently as his camper explains chess to him. i love watching milson initiate a heart-to-heart with one of his guys. i love all the little things i get to see as i walk around camp. so much silliness, so much happiness, so much joy. and it’s all so very real.

i like real.

week two: “we need to find him something new to lick.”

this is the first night off i’ve had in almost a week, and it has been wonderful. there is so much to update, and i don’t know if i have time for it all before i have to be back, but i’ll do my best.

kellie and i like to share our highs of the day with each other. since there was so much that went so awesomely, i think i’ll stick to that formula.

week two highs:

1.) peteca clinic. these kids are amazing people. i’ve already written about them, but the final days of the week saw us encouraging the heck out of each other, traveling to a new volleyball court, and having adam come and watch one of our games (they desperately wanted to be in closing campfire somehow). it’s always tough to say goodbye to campers who are so obviously amazing people, but at the same time it’s exciting to watch them go back to the outside world and imagine how they’re going to change it for the better.

2.) capture the flag. john, one of the blazer counselors, came up with a brilliant new way of playing capture the flag that involves four teams and twelve flags. also it’s like the funnest thing ever to play. i guarded the jail, and in order to be free, i required two eight counts of choreographed dance. needless to say, i had the best position in the whole game.

there were many fierce people playing. many.

3.) seeing old campers that i absolutely love.

4.) hip hop clinic with fizz. not only is fizz an awesome person to work with, but the kids themselves rocked it this past week. we performed at closing campfire and they totally deserved it. it was such a blast.

5.) going on a creek adventure with chickasaw! we basically just went down to ghost creek and found cool bugs and rocks and stuff. and yeah, i get paid for this job somehow.

6.) seeing random favorite people.

7.) coord time. i love all of these people so much, and this picture should be enough reason:

week one: “i just want to like penguins. is it okay if i like penguins?”

aaaaand one week down, eight to go.

fridays and saturdays are always an odd mixture of crazy chaos and bittersweet. there are so many things going on, and then all of a sudden everything stops and the kids go home. sometimes it feels like the rug has been pulled out from under you. but things get a little better when you remember you have a fresh group of kids coming the next day.

sometimes that makes things more stressful, depending on the week you’ve had.

friday is always a blast. everyone’s exhaustion gets pushed off at least a little because OHMYGOODNESSITSFRIDAY. clinics are fun, everyone has a special kind of energy, and everything seems a little more exciting. plus you get rockstar counselors like soaps and nick who dress up because why not.

my showchoir and hip-hop clinics auditioned for adam, and they rocked it. showchoir was pretty psyched to hear that they’d be performing in closing campfire.

friday also means the unit game. kellie and i figured that we should start the summer off strong with the beloved banana death march. it’s always a favorite. it was interesting being behind the scenes and being responsible for setting everything up. there are things we’ll do better next time, but it was so much fun to look around and see all the kids having a blast destroying their bananas.

the kids did a fantastic job of going all out, because only two cabins came back with bananas. the rest handed us peels in various stages of distress. kaitlyn’s and bradzilla’s cabins tied for grand prize, so they got a nice new hairdo that included mushy banana. they were such good sports.

friday means theme dinners, too. this week the theme was disco, so we got a lot of colors and fabrics and wigs. it was great. the best part about theme dinners is that you don’t actually need something that goes with the theme. if you can pull it off with confidence, it automatically matches the theme.

my favorite is when you get campers whose parents bought the same costume. i think a camp record might have been set with these guys (from three different cabins):

friday night is topped off with closing campfire, a time to celebrate the week, showcase awesome campers, and watch the performance clinics rock it on stage. show choir was maybe sort of excited to be up there:

we watched people dance, sing, act, and boogie all night. we sang about silly willy, watched a soap opera about two girls both toasting to their guy rudy jay begonia, and hailed the new buffalo queen.you know campfire as usual. the first campfire of the summer passed by smoothly and hilariously. loved every minute, and i was so proud of my clinic campers! they had a blast on stage and they looked so great!

after campfire we went back to the cabin for the bead devotion. it went really well too; i feel like it was the one where the campers were best behaved and really listened. when they chose which characteristic of the creed they wanted to work on, they really though about it, which was cool.

then saturday came, and it was time to say goodbye. enter the bittersweet.

i also managed to get some great pictures with campers from last summer. i love these guys.

gabe’s grown up a lot. this is one of those kids that i just know God is going to use to do huge things. gabe has the most sincere heart out of anyone i know. i love him to death.

joey and reed are some of my favorites. these guys, along with another named nate, are staying over, so i’ll get to see them next week too. my partner nate is working this weekend and has them all in his cabin. i joined them for devos tonight, and it was so incredibly encouraging to witness how the Lord has been growing them in understanding of what it looks like to live a life that honors God. i was humbled and blessed and so thankful. i’m excited to watch these guys grow.

camp is significant, friends. it changes people. God moves in really cool ways. and i’m pumped to see Him do it all over again next week!
