here are a collection of one hundred photos that i feel define my camp experience this summer. hope you guys enjoy them!
a bunch of us playing cards at staff training. we were always hanging out when we weren’t learning how to treat wounds or clean up throw up or safety precautions on rock walls.
some of us went to this awesome place called von’s… it had books, knick-knacks, comic books, music, and a ton of other stuff.
gus, before we knew we were partners. he’s a very hyper person.
some of the guys on ice cream social night! it was goood ice cream.
we each found out what age group we were in via twitter posts. yes, camp tecumseh has reached the twenty-first century!
me and gus, after learning we were partners. yay for the brave unit!
yes, ali and i do spontaneous show choir lifts. what about it?
we climbed a twelve-foot wall using nothing but each other. no big deal.
one of my favorite spots on camp: the road between lake village and river village.
everybody do the mohawk rock!
playing an exciting game of pirates of tecumseh!
seriously, who hasn’t secretly wanted to play with one of these things since the last time you saw it in elementary school?
we got to hang out with some pretty cool people this summer.
red or dead! red or dead!
mmmyeah, lunchtime, yeah.
this one had questions. lots of them.
cute kids! gotta love ’em.
you have to have a mohawk if you live in the mohawk cabin, of course.
two of my favorites.
at camp t, your coolness is measured by how many different pairs of sunglasses you have. this guy was really, really cool.
these boys were shamelessly enthralled with the bunny rabbits at the minifarm.
he’s definitely winning the pillow fight with the bears backing him up!
we have dance parties on fridays. be jealous.
“give me your best dance pose! go!”
this guy made me a duck tape wallet. i’m currently using it.
a bunch of us went to chicago for the weekend. we got to see the bean!
two of my best friends: jarrod and freddie!
it just looked really cool.
one of my favorite pictures i’ve ever taken.
it was the first time i’d been in a big city at night, and it was stunning.
another one of my favorites. we had a few checkers competitions. i won each time, but only barely!
the whole gang before heading off to chapel. our cilt, chris, was with us.
they had an impromptu hot sauce competition.
no one won.
we had triplets that week! thankfully, only two of them were identical, but they were all great!
this guy… this guy was just awesome.
and this guy was just crazy.
i’m wearing the two friendship bracelets this one made me.
reason #2840 i loved my job.
i was actually kind of afraid his mom would get mad at us for writing on that shirt. but he absolutely loved it.
did i mention i actually got paid to hang out with these kids?
giant spiders at skywalkers = no big deal.
just the mohawk cabin chillin’ out in our eighties attire.
the moustache is my favorite.
and the afro in this one.
he was so excited to be wearing that chili pepper hat!
this was the one i got closest to this summer. just an awesome, awesome kid. i can’t say enough good things about this guy.
form the cow –> tip the cow –> have a cow.
singing some crazy songs at campfire!
reason #5488 i loved my job.
we had an awesome cilt that week. holla!
this guy went from regular to advanced friendship bracelet clinics. we were very proud of him. he taught me how to do the diagonal bracelet (a regular one) so i have to make one and mail it to him.
the whole mohawk gang waiting to go to closing campfire!
pillow fight in the nature center, one of my other favorite places at camp.
utter chaos! *clap* *clap* *clapclapclap*
thank you, bobby dorn, for giving me nightmares.
they were dressed up as the old man and the little boy from the movie up! best costumes of the summer.
ali was rapunzel, naturally.
yay skywalker buddies! also, these foam swords were kind of a fad this summer. you could find them basically anywhere. it was great.
it took us five tries to get this picture. reason #9173 i loved my job.
we had a funny face contest.
i taught him this one. he spent his two weeks here perfecting it. we were both proud of the result.
probably my favorite picture i’ve ever taken. this guy avoided smiling on camera at all costs, and i bet him that i could catch him before the week was up. this was taken on the last day.
ooooh, kings and queens and bishops too, want to wish the best to you, so wishday, washday, wednesday, birthday… happy birthday (huh!) to you! (huh huh!)
this is big john, our day camp counselor. he was great. this may or may not be the only photo evidence that he existed.
i really miss him.
mine and becca’s fabulous dinner spread for our weekend hangout. notice the top-shelf, name-brand napkins we got. only the best for our outings.
the picture really doesn’t reveal how creepy that elevator was.
this is gaga, one of the most intense games you will ever play with a bunch of ten-year-olds. many times i was scared for my life in this arena.
we taught them how to play mao. we had some awesome games.
reason #10281 i loved my job.
so. many. santa hats. (the theme was christmas in july)
random jump rope contests? yes please.
this picture defines the time i spent in the pool. i think i have scars on my shoulders from some of their nails.
another one of my favorites. this guy was always fun to hang out with.
“everyone do a crazy pose! go!”
waiting for parents to come on saturday.
it was always a little tough saying goodbye. depending on the kid.
i just like this picture a lot. this guy and i traded magic card tricks throughout the week.
they didn’t believe me at first when i told them i needed them to buzz my hair, but they warmed up to the idea rather quickly.
that is a legitimate look of concern on my face. also, fear.
do i need to list any more reasons i loved my job?
a cool shot of the entire camp at closing campfire.
gus really loved the kids. promise.
mmmyeah, struggle bus, yeah.
we had two guys of ours in the martial arts clinic, and the performed after dinner for us! it was great.
if you can’t read my shirt, it says “reason # 50 why i’m cool: this outfit. yes.”
photobomb to the max.
i miss this guy.
staff banquet! from the left to the right: freddie (from brazil), rachel, marie, and patience (from england). you meet some of the coolest people at camp.
ryan! a true man of God. i learned a lot in the short time i spent with him.
cait 🙂 she has a real heart for the tough kids, and God worked through her in some awesome ways this summer.
sweeeeeeners! always, always full of solid advice. she was here for the kids, and it showed.
shaina and bri. no additional explanation required.
sam! this guy was not only one of the coolest cats i know, but he was one of the best counselors this summer. absolutely spectacular with the (youngest) boys.
jarrod. i just love him. too bad he lives in australia. he’s definitely one of the coolest guys i’ve ever met. i’ll miss him a lot.
and gus. how can i possibly sum up one of my favorite people on the planet with just a sentence or two? gus kept me calm when i was freaking out, he kept me laughing when i was down. he is a brother to me.
i’ll finish with my favorite spot at camp. it’s on the lake-to-river path, looking up at this section of the trees. at night, when i walked back from my nights off, i would often walk back without any lights, just talking to God and enjoying the quiet darkness. when i was almost to the hill, i would come to this patch of trees and look up to see all the beautiful stars. there’s a specific constellation that i recognize now, and i can pick it out whenever i look up into the night sky. just a really cool reminder of how God is always with me, whether it’s at camp, at home, or at school.
well, that’s it, folks. that was a summation of my experience at camp, though it can’t be contained by these hundred photos. it’s been the experience of a lifetime, and God willing, i’ll be back next year.
for those of you who are reading who aren’t so sure about this whole God thing, let me share something with you that i sort of realized this summer. i interacted with hundreds of kids in the past eleven weeks. i got to know ninety-two of them really well. the cool thing is that they all have lives just as intricate and complicated me, and God knows each of them the same way he knows me. lots of times i forget that, and i tend to think that the relationship i have with the Lord is exclusive to me somehow. but He knows every single person on this planet intimately, more than any other being could. He created them. which means, without a doubt, that He cares about them. He loves them like crazy.
which means, without a doubt, He cares about you. He loves you like crazy. i encourage you to remind yourself that you have a Creator who wants to have a personal relationship with you, and the only thing we have to do is want it too.
and you can talk to Him whenever you want. so i also encourage you to try that out. just be open and honest with Him; He already knows everything about you, so there’s no reason to pretend to be someone you’re not, right? just talk to Him. He’s waiting and excited.
until next time, goodnight.
